About Charlene Zhen, LMSW
Asian-American Psychodynamic Therapist in NYC
I am a psychodynamic therapist based in New York City. I work with high-functioning adults navigating long-standing emotional and relational patterns shaped by cultural and family expectations.
Many of the people I work with appear capable and successful on the outside. On the inside, they often feel like they are observing their own lives from a distance, strangely unmoved by the milestones everyone else seems to care about. In my clinical work, I see the toll of consistently putting the needs of others first and the difficulty of knowing what you actually want after a lifetime of doing what was expected.
While many of my clients are Asian Americans and adult children of immigrants, I work with anyone who resonates with a depth-oriented, reflective approach to self-understanding.
My Background: From Tech to Therapy
My perspective is shaped by my experience as the eldest daughter in a Chinese immigrant family navigating complex intergenerational dynamics. From an early age, I was positioned in a caretaking role that required me to be highly attuned to the needs and moods of those around me. These early experiences inform how I understand family-of-origin dynamics and how childhood roles influence adult relationships and self-concept.

Growing up in a family shaped by intergenerational stress and complex parent-child dynamics showed me how people learn to prioritize the expectations of others over their own. This often creates a divide between internal experience and outward presentation. One may appear highly capable to the world while feeling emotional distance or disconnection.
Before entering clinical practice, I spent several years working in tech startups in San Francisco, including senior leadership roles. I witnessed firsthand the perfectionism, relentless optimization, and pressure to perform that define startup culture. I saw how many capable people appeared successful while quietly struggling with a sense that something vital was missing. They were moving from one milestone to the next without a clear sense of what they actually wanted for themselves outside of those achievements.
Why I Became a Therapist
I became a therapist after experiencing the impact of therapy firsthand. Having space to reflect on long-standing patterns and understand how family dynamics shape adult life showed me what becomes possible through depth-oriented work. That experience led me to pursue clinical training at the Columbia University School of Social Work to help others develop that same clarity and self-understanding.
My transition from tech into clinical practice also informs how I understand major life changes, identity shifts, and the difficulty of choosing a path that feels aligned with who you are rather than what is expected.
My Clinical Lens
My approach is psychodynamic, culturally informed, and reflective. While we address immediate symptoms and stressors, our work also focuses on understanding how your emotional life, relationships, and sense of self have been shaped over time. I believe that true agency comes from identifying the unspoken expectations and internal patterns we inherit from our families and cultures.
In therapy, we pay attention to:
- Present-day experiences: We examine your current relationships, emotional reactions, and internal conflicts, looking at how you navigate the interpersonal world.
- Recurring struggles: We identify the persistent patterns that organize your life, including those that keep you stuck and those that shape how you perceive your choices and possibilities.
- Family-of-origin: We explore how early emotional environments and intergenerational dynamics continue to shape your current behavior and your underlying sense of self.
I approach this work with curiosity, patience, and without judgment. By bringing these patterns into the light, we move from being reactive to being intentional. My goal is to help you develop a clearer sense of who you are, what you feel and want, and how to live with greater agency and presence.
