Frequently Asked Questions about Therapy

Have questions about therapy?

This page provides information about how therapy works, who I work with, and what to expect.

Logistics and Getting Started

I’m glad you’re here and considering this step toward greater clarity and self-understanding. The first step is a free 15-minute video consultation. During this call, we can talk briefly about what brings you to therapy, answer any questions you have, and see if it feels like a good fit to work together.

If we move forward, we’ll schedule your first in-person session in my Union Square office and take it one step at a time. I’m here to support you through the process and any uncertainties that may arise.

The core of my practice is in-person therapy at my Union Square office in Manhattan. Meeting in person often allows for a deeper and more grounded connection.

I also offer occasional virtual sessions for travel, illness, or other temporary circumstances, but ongoing therapy is primarily in-person.

Individual and couples sessions are typically 45 minutes. In your first session, we’ll talk about what brings you in and establish a regular weekly time that works for you. Many people find weekly sessions provide a rhythm that supports meaningful insight and progress. Some clients choose to meet twice a week for more intensive work.

The first session focuses on understanding what brings you to therapy and getting to know you. We will discuss what you are hoping to work on, your history, and any questions you have about the process. This is also an opportunity for you to see how it feels to work with me and to get a sense of whether we are a good fit.

There is no pressure to share everything in the first meeting. Therapy is a gradual process, and we will take the time needed to build trust and understanding as we begin to explore your experiences.

The Therapeutic Approach

Psychodynamic therapy is a reflective approach that explores how your past experiences and early relationships continue to influence your present life. Sessions are conversational. We pay attention to what’s on your mind and the deeper patterns that emerge over time.

For more about my approach, see the Services page.

The duration varies depending on your goals. Because we’re exploring deeper patterns, I tend to work with people on an open-ended, long-term basis. We’ll check in regularly about how the work is going.

This approach is particularly helpful for people navigating family or cultural expectations, identity questions, or recurring patterns in relationships. It’s a fit for anyone who wants to understand the emotional dynamics shaping their life.

Fees and Insurance

I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance companies directly. However, many clients receive partial reimbursement for our sessions through their out-of-network benefits. I recommend contacting your insurance provider to understand your specific mental health coverage and deductible before we begin.

A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes everything your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network therapy claim, such as dates, session type, and billing codes.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You pay for sessions directly at the time of your appointment
  2. At the end of the month, I provide a superbill
  3. You submit the superbill to your insurance company
  4. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, your insurance company reimburses you directly according to your plan

I have a limited number of sliding scale spots available. Fee information is discussed during the initial consultation. If cost is a barrier to starting therapy, please mention this during our consultation call so we can discuss options.
