Children of Immigrants & Asian American Identity
Growing up as the child of immigrants
If you grew up as the child of immigrants, you may have learned early to be capable, to carry the family’s hopes, and to be the one who was fine so that everyone else could be. Achievement became a way to feel safe and loved. It also, somewhere along the way, left you a little distant from yourself.
The guilt that comes with wanting something for yourself
Therapy is a space to slow down and notice how that happened. We explore the guilt that surfaces when you want something for yourself, the closeness to your parents that lives right alongside the distance, and the quiet exhaustion of moving between two worlds without fully belonging to either. These patterns are not flaws to correct. They are adaptations that made sense, and understanding them is what begins to loosen their hold.
What culturally informed therapy looks like
This is reflective, culturally informed work. We look at how family roles and cultural expectations shaped the person you became, how those early templates still organize your adult life, and what becomes possible when your sense of self is no longer built entirely around meeting others’ needs. Over time, the aim is a clearer, more grounded understanding of who you are underneath everything you have accomplished, and more freedom in how you live and relate.
